Who is Dr. Happy?

Dr. Timothy J Sharp (as he is traditionally known) completed a B.Sc. (Hons), a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology and a Ph.D., before working for many years as a clinical and academic psychologist.  He is highly regarded in both the academic world (with a number of scientific publications and a formal appointment at the Universities of Sydney and New South Wales), as well as among his clinical peers.

Dr. Sharp has also developed a strong standing in the business community after successfully building his clinical psychology practice, Dr. Timothy Sharp & Associates, in to Sydney’s largest (an achievement for which he was named as a finalist in the Telstra Business Awards).  This practice, which continues to grow, has also forged an exciting path in to cyberspace by conducting some of the first research, and by delivering some of the most comprehensive services in the world of online therapy (see www.makingchanges.com.au).

In addition to his clinical and academic achievements Dr. Sharp has also written several self-help books including the best selling “The Good Sleep Guide”, published by Penguin Australia in 2001, and “The Happiness Handbook” (Finch, 2005).  The former is now in its third print run and the rights have been sold in about 10 countries around the world (including translations in to Chinese, Japanese and Arabic).  Further, he has contributed to a number of other publications including “Emotional Fitness”, “Don’t eat your feelings” and “When your Mr. Right is Mr. Wrong” (in press).

More recently, however, Dr. Sharp’s passion and energy has shifted away from traditional, clinical psychology and toward “positive psychology”, one of the most exciting areas of contemporary mental health and an amazingly powerful approach to well-being.  Although his team continues to treat people with common problems such as depression, anxiety and relationship difficulties, his personal focus has gradually shifted towards helping people identify and work with their strengths with a view to fostering and bolstering authentic happiness.

Dr. Sharp has become one of Australia’s leading experts in positive psychology and especially, in the field of happiness.

The culmination of this burning passion occurred in late 2003 with the founding of The Happiness Institute.  The opening of this exciting new organisation has seen an incredibly positive response with individuals, families, schools and businesses all expressing interest in learning how to enhance happiness.

Dr. Sharp has appeared and been featured on Today Tonight, A Current Affair, Good Morning Australia and in numerous print publications locally and internationally (including The Weekend Australian, Sunday Life, Vogue etc.).  He also presents every fortnight on ABC National radio.

Why would you love to book Dr. Happy?
Combining significant, clinical experience (having treated over 1000 individuals and worked with hundreds of organisations), with impressive academic credentials (three degrees in psychology), Dr. Happy presents significant and potentially life changing information in an easy to absorb, palatable and positive style.  Above all, his high quality content is delivered in an enjoyable and entertaining, but also meaningful way.  Why not read what some satisfied clients have said:

“Dr. Sharp is quite simply outstanding!”

  - Virginia Nicholls (National Public Affairs Manager – The Smith Family)

“Dr. Sharp brings A-list credentials to a field that otherwise often resides in the realm of  self-help drivel.”

- National Post/Vancouver Sun (Canada)

“If you think being happy is important, you need to check out The Happiness Institute and its Chief Happiness Officer, Dr Tim Sharp.  I recently organised a visit from Dr Sharp to a group of Melbourne Alumni from the Australian Graduate School of Management.  Tim established his credentials with the audience very early in the presentation, which helped open their minds to his message.

He was both entertaining and informing.  The group of mainly MBA post-graduates – an audience more used to financial models than happiness models - received Tim’s presentation with eager questioning, a few giggles and a warm round of applause.

I thoroughly recommend a visit from Dr Happy for your next corporate workshop or work/life balance education program.”

- Michelle Beveridge - President, Melbourne Alumni
Australian Graduate School of Management

“A very enjoyable and thought provoking seminar.”
- Sally – AGSM attendee (2005)

“Dr. Sharp’s session was a very interesting presentation.”
- CEO Institute

“An enjoyable evening listening to a very captivating speaker.”
- Gina (audience seminar member August 2005)

“The feedback on [Dr. Sharp’s] session was uniformly enthusiastic. Several people came to me saying that they would use the behaviour change technology to shift their own behaviour for improved wellbeing (happiness) along the lines of your suggestions.”
- Alex Jankiewicz (Principal – Safety Works Group)

“I have now had the opportunity of running a number of work life balance and stress management programs, as well as delivering corporate keynotes, with Dr. Timothy Sharp. My first thoughts were (like I’m sure many people think) “Oh know – another psychologist telling us about all of the problems and phobias we have.”

Tim, however, impressed me from the very first time I saw him speak, particularly with his slant towards positive psychology and how we can actually control a lot of the variables that determine levels of happiness. Tim is one of our most popular corporate trainers and speakers, mixing years of research and practical experience with empathy, warmth, great stories and a sense of humour. Tim is a great choice to spread the message of feeling good”.
- Andrew May
Founder, Good Health Solutions
Corporate Speaker (Andrew May Presentations)

“Swiss Re has now run a number of successful ‘work life choice’ programs with Andrew May and Tim Sharp. Our first foray into running these programs (with a different provider) was not very successful at all. So it was with much reservation and nervous anticipation when we decided to try again.

Thankfully, the result was fantastic. The thorough research undertaken by Andrew and Tim allowed them to tap into our culture and really make a difference – showing employees there is a better way to manage our hectic paced lives. I thoroughly recommend their services to any other organisation wanting to support employees integrating work and life”
- Nancy Dalcin
Swiss Re

“The content was great…I really enjoyed it and learned some valuable tips”.
- Participants in Swiss Re.’s Work Life Choice program

“Happiness enhances personal effectiveness. Effectiveness drives performance. So it is our belief that it is important to teach and practice happiness in the workplace to deliver peak performance.  Whilst conventional training programs have focused on technical skills, the ability to understand one's own thinking & behaviours and how it influences others is the next generation in personal development.

Dr Timothy Sharp, from the Happiness Institute, is an engaging, entertaining and informative speaker who promotes the drivers of happiness.  Whilst it is an unusual and intriguing topic, happiness is serious business because it enhances personal effectiveness which in turn drives peak performance".
- John Batistich
Regional Managing Director
Wrigleys

“Dr Tim Sharp has been an active presenter at numerous conferences organised by PPL Education Services during the past several years. Dr Sharp has been invited to present on a number of topics [and] Tim has always provided quality presentations supported by credible research, extensive clinical experience and a great passion for his work. Tim has a wealth of knowledge and takes pride in both the preparation and delivery of his lectures”.

- Sally Lane
Project Director
PPL Education Services

"Over a number of years I have organised and/or participated in many professional development workshops. There have been few to rival the accurate and meaningful delivery of quality information I experienced in a recent session with Dr Tim Sharp. It may sound strange to say that you could hear a pin drop during the sessions but such was the concentration of all participants on the task at hand. On checking the room during breaks, there was not a doodle to be seen on any of the worksheets.

Not only did everyone obviously concentrate on the day, but talk around the water cooler tells us that our people are attempting to live the lessons. What better outcomes could we ask?  Thank you Tim."
- Craig Barber
General Manager
Corus Hotel (Sydney)

“The Happiness Institute provides very simple, positive and effective guidance for anyone who wishes to be truly happy. The programs are based on the premise that happiness is based on how you live your life – everyday.  The course really honed in on the essential elements required for finding one's happiness and provided practical and effective advice on how to apply these elements.  I've always come away from the sessions feeling very positive… Although I’m still learning, The Happiness Institute helped me to see that happiness is a state of being that is genuinely achievable.  One hour sessions that provided a lifetime of value."
- Liz, recent (2004) course participant
